I sometimes find it hard to answer the question “What do you do?” The simplest answer is that I’m an academic and translator. Things get fuzzier when I try to explain what I write about as an academic. I’ve written about Islamic ethics, and I’ve also written about various philosophical questions, though I suspect many philosophers might privately (and even publicly) clear their throat at the idea that the sense of wonder or the pessimistic worldview of Arthur Schopenhauer count as proper philosophical subjects. In the following pages, you can find more about my books, my translations, and some of my more recent activities. There’s a page that selectively summarises my rhapsodic ensemble of activities in Arabic. There’s also another page that makes a wordier attempt to survey the kinds of things I do. Like most people, I’m simply looking for ways to live meaningfully. Like many people, I often wonder whether there might be better ways. So if you see what I do and have an idea I could help with, get in touch.
